How To Find Work
Finding the type of job you want in the UK should
not be particularly difficult if you are prepared
to use all of the information resources at
your disposal and to be patient. The London workforce
in particular offers flexible work opportunities
that appeal to travellers and employers alike.
The most popular methods of finding work are:
Employment Agencies & Official Bodies
Most professions or industry groups are well represented
by employment agencies or official bodies that
will arrange work and/or provide advice. Employment
Agencies can be found throughout the UK, although
London has the greatest number to choose from. Details
of leading employment agencies can be found at A
to Z of Jobs, but don't rely on just one - shop
around!
The Internet
In recent years the Internet has become one of the
most popular information sources for job seekers worldwide.
Most employment agencies offer their own sites, often
providing useful advice, job listings, and of course
the agency contact details. General and specialised
web-sites also cater for the job market as a whole
or for particular industries or professions. Job.co.nz
is one site that lists thousands of jobs both in NZ
and also in the UK.
Newspapers & Magazines
The traditional 'Situations Vacant' columns are
still alive and well, both in the UK daily newspapers
but also in the increasing number of Southern Hemisphere
and expatriate publications. Large ads for employment
agencies can be found in TNT Magazine in
particular, although don't expect the actual jobs
listed to necessarily be available, as these are often
used as 'teasers' by the agencies.
Hostels & Noticeboards
Hostels
often have a job noticeboard or are in contact
with local employers who may have positions available.
The hostels themselves are often staffed by travellers,
so ask reception about work opportunities. A decent
job vacancies noticeboard can also be found at the
New Zealand News UK office in the Royal Opera Arcade
off Haymarket.
Word Of Mouth
Don't underestimate the extent of opportunities
that can be right under your nose - talk to friends,
ask at pubs, parties, or wherever you come into contact
with other travellers or Brits. There is plenty of
work out there, so don't give up if your job hunt
is taking longer than you anticipated.
