UK Ancestry Options
If you are 17 or over and have a grandparent
born in the UK or the Republic of Ireland prior
to 31/3/1922 you may be eligible for a UK Ancestry
Entry Certificate.
This visa allows you to stay for up to five years
and you must intend to seek or take employment
during this time.
You must be able to support yourself and any dependants
adequately without recourse to public funds.
After five years you will be eligible to apply
for permanent residency provided you continue to meet
the requirements of the Rules for UK ancestry and
you have spent a continuous period of four years in
employment in the UK in this capacity.
Certificate of Entitlement to Right of Abode
You may be eligible for this Certificate if you are
a Commonwealth citizen born before 1983 with a
UK-born mother. Applicants born after 1983 are
eligible for a British passport, as are those legitimately
born to a UK-born father.
The certificate of entitlement allows you to live
and work in the UK without restrictions and to
enter and leave the UK free of immigration control.
Note that as South Africa was not part of the Commonwealth
immediately before 1 January 1983, South African
citizens are excluded from applying for a certificate
of entitlement.
To make an application for a certificate of entitlement
to right of abode, download the application forms
and full guidance notes from the British High Commission
websites.
