Access To Money
 |
The UK has a good coverage of ATM machines,
although of course these will be less accessible in
many rural areas. Bank branches (some automated
only) are widespread also, although cost-cutting in
recent years by major banks has had some impact.
Bureau de change can be found in most city
centres or transport hubs such as railway stations.
While many hotels and other money exchange dealers
will offer to change money also, their rates are often
poor and should only be accepted if money is absolutely
required. Thomas
Cook outlets also offer money-changing facilities.
International credit cards are widely accepted
by ATM's and retailers in the UK. Major names such
as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Diners
Club are commonplace. Note however that some rural
businesses and smaller establishments such as B&B's
may only accept cash.
ATM cash cards from your home country may be
usable in UK ATM's - you should confirm this with
your bank before you depart to make sure. Those that
have the Cirrus or Plus logos can access
designated machines throughout the world. Of course,
if you have a UK bank account they will provide you
with a bank card.
For your initial arrival in the UK or for subsequent
travels, it always pays to have some travellers
cheques as back up. These can be easily converted
(usually for a small commission) at banks, bureaux
de change, or branches of Thomas Cook. Visa and American
Express travellers cheques are two of the more common
and widely accepted brands.
