Travel Insurance & Medical Cover
Wherever you're traveling from or to, good travel
insurance is a must. Your travel agent or existing
insurance company should be able to advise you on
your insurance requirements, but do shop around,
as there are plenty of affordable options.
As a minimum, your insurance should cover loss or
theft of money and possessions, emergency repatriation,
public liability, legal expenses, as well as all medical
and dental costs. Remember to make sure that your
coverage period is sufficient for your travel plans
and that there is an emergency assistance service
offered.
While citizens of EU countries, Australia, and New
Zealand are allowed free medical treatment in the
UK, other nationalities should confirm prior to
departure what their own liability will be if they
fall sick. Insurance cover should be tailored accordingly.
No reciprocal medical agreement exists between the
UK and South Africa.
No vaccinations are required to enter the UK,
although if you are traveling via Asia, the Middle
East, South America, or Africa you will need to obtain
the appropriate shots. Note that immigration officials
in the UK can authorize a medical examination before
entry to the country is granted.
