Greenwich Park
Greenwich Park - Background
Greenwich is one of London's most picturesque spots,
and has a long and interesting history. Atop the highest
point in the Park is the Royal Observatory,
established in 1675 and home of 'Greenwich Mean Time'
(by which the rest of the world calculates its time)
and the Prime Meridian (zero longitude). From the
views over East London and Docklands afforded
at the Observatory, the foreground is dominated by
the National Maritime Museum, Royal Naval College,
and Queen's House. These riverside landmarks have
been immortalized by painters such as Turner and Canaletto.
