British Galleries
The Victoria & Albert Museum in South
Kensington is a treasure house that is hard to define
- galleries include artwork, curiosities, dresses,
Indian and Oriental art, statues and monuments, sculpture,
and objects d'art. With seven miles of corridors,
this is one museum where it is simply Impossible
to fully appreciate the collection in one visit.
A stunning addition to the Victoria & Albert Museum
is the recently opened British Galleries, a
permanent exhibit that celebrates four centuries
of British art, architecture, sculpture, and other
treasures. This well presented, fascinating insight
into changing styles, cultural movements, political,
historical, and social landmarks is quite simply a
'must see'.
Highlights are too numerous to mention - although
the huge Bed of Ware and the reassembled room interiors
of great houses are favourites. With the galleries
covering two floors, there is too much to absorb in
one visit.
An excellent online gallery is also provided
at the museum, and many exhibits are augmented by
audio and video displays.
Thankfully, entrance is free. For more information,
visit the museum website at www.vam.ac.uk.
