British Sport
Sport in Britain is a serious matter. Of course
it was the Brits that gave us sports such as football,
golf, cricket, and rugby union, with these sports
in particular still attracting a lot of support throughout
the country.
The British sporting calendar is full of top fixtures
such as the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships,
The Grand National and Royal Ascot Races,
Cowes Week (Yachting), the British Open
(Golf), the Six Nations Rugby Championships,
Cricket Tests (particularly the Ashes series
against Australia), and the FA Cup (football).
In any given week (dependant on the season of course),
there is bound to be Premiership
Football, Superleague Rugby League, county
cricket, rugby union, and horse racing on within
reach. Minor sports such as basketball, snooker, and
even darts can be followed by loyal fans.
Britain's favourite winter sport by a country
mile is football (or soccer). Most Brits either
actively support a team, offer a less fanatic passive
support for a team, or at least follow the results
of the Premiership. Teams like Manchester United,
Liverpool, and Chelsea are household
names throughout the world. While Manchester United
has dominated the sport in recent years, rival clubs
Arsenal and Liverpool are challenging that supremacy.
