Gay Britain
Homosexuality between consenting adults aged 18
or above has been legal in the UK since only 1994.
The age of consent remains two years above that for
heterosexual partners, much to the consternation of
gay rights activists.
Britain has a thriving gay scene, and despite
the hostility of mainstream tabloids and a few reactionary
pockets of conservatism, attitudes towards homosexuality
are fairly relaxed. This does not mean, however, that
violence against gays and discrimination is not frequent
- these issues continue to be grappled with in modern
Britain.
Gay Publications
Pink Paper is produced weekly and can be obtained
from alternative and some mainstream newsagents and
bookstores. The monthly Gay Times is a popular
magazine with extensive listings of pubs, clubs, contacts
etc. Diva is a leading magazine for lesbians.
