Moving Into An Shared
Flat
Even though there is a fair bit of competition for
available rooms or flats, it can be a mistake to jump
at the first half decent room offered to you. Before
deciding on your new home, you should consider
the following:
- Do you want to live with English people,
or in an 'international' flat?
- Do you want your own room or are you happy
to share?
- Is your flat near a tube station or bus
route?
- How long will it take you to get to and from
work? What will your transport costs
be?
- How many people are in the flat, and what
is the policy on dossers? Whose name
is on the lease?
- How much are the bills and how are these
expenses divided up? What 'extras'
are there to pay for (e.g. TV, video)?
- Does everyone buy their own food and/or
do their own cooking? Is there a flat 'kitty'?
- Is there a roster for housework?
- Is their a decent bathroom and laundry?
- Are their shops nearby?
While these questions should be asked as a matter
of course, be prepared to be 'interviewed' yourself.
Most established flats can afford to be choosy
as to who they select to move in due to high demand
for places in shared flats. Make sure that you're
compatible with your potential flatmates, otherwise
this can seriously detract from your OE.
